Job Description
The purpose of this position is to blade gravel roads and removes snow from all county and township roads.The work is performed under the direction of the Highway Superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Blades County and township gravel roads; removes snow from all county and township roads; checks roads for flooding and washouts; and reports damaged roads and signs.
Coordinates graveling of roads and assists with grade raises.
Maintains equipment and keeps records for billing purposes.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:
While the following tasks are necessary for the work to the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
Operates pay loader, back hoe, trucks and forklift as needed.
Cleans the shop and inventories equipment and materials.
Minimum Training and Experience Required Performing Essential Job Functions:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by four to nine months of vocational/technical training in related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. North Dakota Commercial License required.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
Requires the ability to assemble, copy, and record data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.

Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE:Under supervision of the County Road Superintendent and County Engineer, is responsible for performing general labor-type duties, hand and power tool operation, and intermediate level truck and equipment operation on various road and bridge projects.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Must have the ability to read and write.
• Requires a valid North Dakota Class A driver’s license non-air restricted and with a tanker endorsement.
• Two (2) or more years of experience in the operation of various types of heavy equipment, truck driving and maintenance duties of highway and road projects are preferred.
• Candidates must successfully complete a standard background and criminal record check along with an alcohol and controlled substance test and physical exam. Costs associated with these exams will be paid for by the County
• Must live within an approximate 45-minutes response time to the assigned shop.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participates with other maintenance personnel to perform general labor duties using hand tools including but not limited to: shovels, rakes, posts hole diggers, brooms, scrapers, etc. for use in shop and grounds maintenance, asphalt patching, preparing culvert beds, snow removal, etc.
2. Places traffic control signs and devices, assists traffic through work zones as required.
3. Operates jackhammers, air compressors, mechanical tampers, power saws, hydraulic drivers and similar equipment.
4. Operates semis and dump trucks hauling maintenance material and drive trucks in plowing snow and spreading traction material.
5. Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment to a varying degree of difficulty, including but not limited to the following: motor graders, front end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, rollers, mowers, trucks of all types, asphalt related equipment and other equipment associated with road and bridge maintenance.
6. Performs related work as required including minimal routine repair and maintenance of vehicles, buildings, and grounds as required.
7. Occasionally serves as a temporary crew leader on small projects as assigned by supervisor.
8. Generates detailed daily timecards, material and work reports.
9. Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Applicant must have knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures, safe handling procedures with knowledge of industrial and traffic safety procedures, and knowledge of landowner rights and protection rights of private property.
• Applicant must have the abilities to perform the essential functions, with or without accommodation which may include but not limited to: extended sitting, lift and carry objects, bend, stretch reach, climbing, working and driving in low-light, low-visibility conditions, and work at various heights from the ground, on bridges, trucks and/or equipment.

Position Summary:The County Road Supervisor is responsible for the planning, direction, and oversight of all road and bridge construction, maintenance, and repair operations within Burke County. This position manages departmental staff, develops and monitors budgets, coordinates with contractors and public agencies, ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards, and reports to the County Commission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of all road department personnel.
• Prepare and manage the annual department budget, including equipment purchases, labor costs, and maintenance expenses.
• Develop long-range plans for road improvement and capital projects in consultation with county officials.
• Inspect roads, bridges, and drainage systems to determine maintenance and repair needs.
• Ensure all projects comply with federal, state, and county regulations, including environmental and safety requirements.
• Oversee hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline of road department staff.
• Coordinate work with utility companies, contractors, and other government agencies.
• Respond to emergencies, including weather-related events, and coordinate necessary response actions.
• Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and present updates to the County Commission.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field preferred.
• Five (5) years of experience in road construction or public works, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or management role preferred.
• Valid ND driver’s license; CDL preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting, personnel management, and project planning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Proficient in budget preparation and financial reporting.
• Familiarity with applicable state and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, MUTCD, EPA).
• Ability to interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Basic computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and scheduling software.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both office and field settings. Must be available for on-call duty during weather events or emergencies. Physical demands include walking over rough terrain, climbing, lifting, and operating or inspecting heavy equipment.
