Understanding and Addressing Hazing Risks in Public Safety Organizations

Wednesday, December 2nd   10am - 11am, CT

Description: Hazing in public safety remains a persistent cultural risk, but the primary trend is not necessarily an increase in incidents — it is an increase in reporting, claims and organizational exposure. Historically underreported behaviors are now more likely to surface due to legal changes, cultural shifts and greater scrutiny of workplace conduct. As a result, agencies face heightened liability, with hazing incidents more frequently framed as failures in supervision, training and leadership rather than isolated misconduct.

High-severity cases and growing media attention further amplify both legal and reputational risk. For risk managers, this means hazing must be addressed as a systemic culture and accountability issue, not just a policy matter, with emphasis on proactive supervision, clear reporting mechanisms and early intervention to prevent escalation.
