Traditionally, most efforts have focused on preparing for and responding to these incidents, however, decades of study demonstrate that much can be done to prevent this type of violence in our society by identifying and recognizing pre-attack behaviors, ensuring that the observation of these behaviors is reported to the appropriate authorities, and that the subject of such reporting is properly assessed for the risk of violence he/she poses.
